Europa Point complex set to boost sports in Gibraltar

High hopes for an eco-friendly and influential site for local sport

Further heightening anticipation for what promises to be an innovative new development, Gibraltar sports minister Steven Linares recently visited the site, declaring that it would aim to deliver not only environmental sustainability, but also vital foundations for sport in the territory.

As reported by the Gibraltar Chronicle, Mr Linares told journalists that the scheme – on which the sports, culture and environment agencies have all worked – would also incorporate heritage elements to maximise the area’s appeal to tourists.

The building project, which is now at an advanced stage, is set to combine sports with careful consideration of the locality’s heritage and tourism needs. Renewable energy resources will also be used to power it, with solar panels expected to provide more energy than required by the facilities at full power; this, in turn, will enable any excess to be channelled into the grid.

Mr Linares said the intention was to have a “cost neutral” complex to run, explaining: “With renewables, we are going to have electricity from the sun. We will sometimes have to use the grid, but we will also be investing into the grid.”

Once construction is complete, it is expected that participating associations will form a sports trust to run the facilities, alongside the Gibraltarian government.
