Black Lives Matter
04 July, 2020
Gibraltar has expressed its solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement, joining the global protests against racism and inequality. The organisers say that as well as creating awareness, they want to open dialogue on any form of racism that may exist at a local level.
The demonstration assembled at the American Steps on Saturday morning and made its way past Irish Town to John Mackintosh Square.
There were speeches from representatives of minority groups, the Equality Rights Group and Unite. The Union’s Michael Netto thanked GBC’s Viewpoint programme for having highlighted the poor living conditions of many on the Rock.
The addresses were followed by a one minute silent ‘taking a knee’ a common sign of solidarity in demonstrations around the world.
According to Police estimates around 120 attended the Demonstration, although the organisers put the figure at closer to 200.
